I called the project "Discovering the Books of the Reading Room" because that's what it feels like I've done. When I started, I had an idea of what books were in there, but not to the scale I now know. I think this discovery will benefit all the teachers who are looking for a book and can now search the catalog to know if it can be found at CLS and if so, where to find it. I definitely had high expectations when I started this project. I expected to get through all of 4th and 3rd grade and maybe start 2nd. What I did get done is all of 4th and two themes from 3rd grade. This was a time consuming project, but what was done was immediately useful, making the project very rewarding. My suggestions to continue the project are as follows. 1. Contact Bibliomation and get records for the books that go with the themes already cataloged. As mentioned in the procedures, there were quite a few books that didn't have records to copy catalog from. Bibliomation will add these records so we can add holdings from our school. Myself or Mrs. McNeice will add these records to the catalog following the same procedure as the rest of the books, before the end of the school year. 2. At the next faculty meeting (May5th) I will be presenting what I have accomplished and showing teachers how to search the catalog to find the books I cataloged. (The link is currently connected to my class web page but will also be available on the library page.) 3. Mark books with Accelerated Reader stickers if we have the quizzes. A parent volunteer could compare lists so books are properly marked. 4. Use summer curriculum funds to finish 3rd grade themes and start 2nd grade. I am submitting a proposal to the district to try and keep this project going. 5. If the proposal isn't accepted or to continue the project after the summer, I suggest Mrs. Kelly and/or Mrs. Brookes be taught the procedure to add books from cataloged themes and new books as they are purchased. It would be wonderful to always have a current and updated list of the books available to teachers and students. LG 4/20/04 |
