Mrs.Whiting's Second Grade

October 26, 2007

Highlights of our learning:

Reading

Math

We finished our Silly Stories Theme.

Before starting the next theme, we learned about making connections to the text we read. We discussed how Text to Self connections and Text to Text connections help readers gain a deeper understanding of the text. The children then practiced making connections in their own reading.

Students have been working on addition and subtraction facts using fact families, games, and word problems.

Students are also working on activities to build their number sense. We have been comparing numbers and deciding if they are greater than (>), less than (<), or equal (=) to each other.

We are working on combination problems during problem solving.

Social Studies

Science

On Monday, members of the CLS Fire Department visited our school. This year’s fire safety theme was Practice Your Escape Plan. The firefighters encouraged students to work with their families to develop a fire escape plan with two exits for each room.

We are taking a brief break from nutrition to do a book inquiry about penguins. In November we will begin using the Internet to watch the progress of several Adelie penguin nests on Ross Island, Antarctica.

We need your help!!!

Many hands make light work (and a fun Halloween party)!

Mrs. Iverson and Mrs. Busky are planning our class Halloween party. They will be at school on Wednesday coordinating the party. If you are interested in helping out, out please contact Mrs. Iverson or Mrs. Busky. We are looking for paper goods and goodies for the party. The children will appreciate and enjoy your efforts.

Mrs. Iverson: 871-8570

Mrs. Busky: 872-1871

Please remember to send your child with a snack each day!

Halloween Update

Wednesday is Halloween. We will have a celebration at the end of the day (2:00 – 3:15).

Children may bring costumes to school to put on before the party. Students will change into their costumes in the classroom so they should have costumes that the child is able to put on independently over their clothing. No face paint or weapons will be allowed.

Thanks in advance to Mrs. Iverson and Mrs. Busky for coordinating our party. See the other side of this notice if you are interested in helping with the party.
