Dear Parents,

Hello!  Sorry, I have been off my newsletter routine for a few weeks.  We have been doing well here in third grade though.  In Reading we have worked on two more animal habitat stories along with guided reading and independent reading.  The students really have enjoyed our last story about deer in the city.  Ask your child to tell you about the “peaceful protest” the neighbors did to protect the deer.  We have worked on vocabulary development, comparing and contrasting, making judgments and summarizing for our main comprehension work in these last two stories.  In Writing we have been having a great deal of fun.  We have been working on a poetry unit.  We have read all kinds of different poetry and identified distinguishing characteristics of the poetry.  The children have also tried their hand at writing a variety of poetry.  They absolutely LOVE it!!!  I actually have a room full of poets.  It is so exciting.

In Math we have been working on perimeter, line graphs, and word problems.  We have done several activities with “walking around shapes” to learn about perimeter.  In Science we finished up our unit on matter over the past few weeks and took our test today.  In Social Studies we continue our study of Japan.  The children really are enjoying it.  In Handwriting we learned capital N and M.  The past few weeks have been full of new learning.

          Just a few notes:

1.       It was so nice to meet and talk with parents about their children.  It is a special time to share all the good things each child does.  Thank you.

2.      Just a reminder, next Friday, April 4th is a half day for teacher inservice.

3.      May 2nd is our field trip to Old Sturbridge Village.  As the date approaches more information will be forthcoming.

Have a great weekend!

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Mrs. Johnson
