Each year the National Education Association celebrates “Read Across America” on March 2nd. March 2nd was chosen for this special day because it is the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The rhyming patterns and predictable text of Dr. Seuss books are credited with helping a generation of children learn to read. To help celebrate Read Across America this year all Crystal Lake staff and students will participate in a school-wide Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) session on Friday, February 29. I mention this not only to reaffirm our belief that some time each day should be set aside for children to read independently and be read to, but also because |

this year we are lucky to have the support of the PTO in bringing children’s author, Suzy Kline to Crystal Lake. Ms. Kline is the author of numerous children’s books, (The Horrible Harry Series) and is a former elementary school teacher right here in Connecticut. Ms. Kline draws upon her experiences (as all good authors do) as an elementary school teacher to infuse humor into her stories but also to make the characters come alive to her readers with their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Please join us on March 6th as we gear up for Ms. Kline’s visit. We will read and discuss some of Ms. |

Kline’s books. March is an exciting month at CLS not only because we get to celebrate our love of reading with these events, but also because we get to begin the process of welcoming the newest members of the Crystal Lake family at kindergarten registration. Kindergarten registration will take place the week of March 10-14. Evening registration will be available on March 11 from 6-7, immediately preceding the PTO meeting. If you have a child who will be five years old prior to January 1, 2009 or know of a friend or neighbor who does, please encourage them to stop by during this week to register. Michael Larkin |
