Frequently Asked Questions

 

Question:  What is a portal?

Answer:  Students and parents have recieved a username and password to log into a section of the Ellington Public Schools website known as Student and Parent Portals.  This login will give you access to web pages for all of the classes in which the student is enrolled.  These class pages have several features that are designed to increase communication between teachers and students, as well as enhance instruction outside of the classroom.  This includes a calendar, a place to post resources for students, a drop box for students to submit work, a media channel to post videos, photo and audio files, online quizzes, blogs, and discussions.  Students will also have a personal file folder that they can use to store their own personal files and have access to them both at school and at home.

In addition, you can use this login to subscribe to alerts that are available thoughout the website.  For example, you can sign up for an alert if you would like to get an email notification when the teacher posts items on the classroom calendar, or when the superintendent posts on his blog.  To do this, just click on the alert button when you see it.

 

Question:  What is the difference between a student and parent portal?

Answer:  The student login will give access to that individual student's classes and all of the features available. Students will also have a personal file folder to store documents.  The parent portal will allow parents to see all of their children's classes in one location.  The access is more limited, however.  Parents will see the overview, activity, bulletin board media, calendar, and resources. 

The following features are not accessible by parents:
Discussions
Blog Comments ( they can see the blog topic/post)
Quizzes
Drop Box
NOTE: The quizzes and drop box for submitting assignments appear on the group calendar so the parents can view due dates and assigned quizzes.

 

Question:  Will I be able to view grades through the portal?

Answer:  No, our system does not currently allow the viewing of gradebooks on line.

 

Question:  What do I do if I forgot or lost my username and password?

Answer:  Click on the 'Forgot my username/password' link on the login page

 

Question:  How do I change my password?

Answer: Once you log in, click on the 'update my password' link

 

Questions:  How do I access my classes?

Answer:  After you log in, you will see classes listed under 'My Groups'.
