Growing Exceptional Learners

Emotional Intelligence

EPS Framework for Emotional Intelligence (EI)

This concept outlines our district’s commitment to fostering emotional intelligence through the RULER framework.

The approach begins with strengthening key underlying skills, such as:

  • listening
  • reflecting
  • identifying emotions
  • decision-making
  • stress management
  • mindfulness
  • perspective-taking
  • healthy peer relationships
  • conflict resolution

These foundational skills support the development of core emotional-intelligence abilities, including self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.

The framework encourages important practices such as listening and reflecting, allowing for emotional reactions, speaking one’s truth, assuming good intentions, finding similarities while valuing differences, and engaging in respectful dialogue.

Together, these steps help students grow into thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible members of our school community.

To Focus on Academics: Emotions Matter

In Ellington, we know that academics matter to you and your family. Our goal as a school system is to ensure we create school cultures that challenge and inspire students, set high standards for academic rigor, and support students in reaching their full potential. In order for students to succeed academically, we need to sometimes help them learn strategies to respond to both emotional and social situations.

The EPS Framework for Emotional Intelligence (EI) will equip our teachers with the training and resources necessary to help students better regulate their emotions, reduce stress through effective strategies, and resolve conflicts respectfully. This framework links the Seeds of Civility to the essential skills students need to develop, such as active listening and showing respect for others, enabling them to engage in constructive conversations and maintain their focus on learning. Ultimately, the Framework for Emotional Intelligence will help ensure our students are exceptional learners and contributing members of our community.
