A Message From Mr. Mitchell - EHS Interim Principal

Good afternoon EHS Students and Families,

I want to start by taking a moment to thank both the students and staff here at EHS for their perseverance through the last two weeks. The multi-day weather interruptions have caused a lot of adjustments on the fly, and the flexibility and dedication in this building has not gone unnoticed.

Let's all hope that the winter weather is now behind us! With that being said, this coming Monday (March 9th) will be a Drop AB day with a RoundTable block worked in. As always, refer to the EHS Annual Bell Calendar to see the upcoming schedule.

Congratulations to the EHS band and chorus groups for putting on a wonderful event last night. The Good Music, Good Cause concert featured 8 different ensembles (4 vocal and 4 instrumental) and collected hundreds of canned goods and other household items that will be donated to a local organization.

Finally, don't forget to Spring your clocks forward this weekend. Forgetting to set your clocks is not one of our reasons for excusing a tardy to school!

Take care and enjoy your weekend,
Jon Mitchell
EHS Interim Principal

The play is a powerful and moving play about the story of people in the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on the morning of September 11, above the point of impact. The piece takes place in the tower as well as moments within the character’s minds and memories.

Please note that the date of Saturday, March 14 is the competition performance at Kinsella Magnet School, there will be no performance at Ellington High School over the weekend.

Dear Parent/Guardians and Students of the EHS Class of 2029,

The Class of 2029 is raising money with a Munson’s Chocolate Fundraiser! We are fortunate enough to be able to fundraise money with a very popular item, Munson’s Chocolate Candy! This is our opportunity to begin raising funds for our graduating class so that we can reduce the cost of our senior class dues.

Seal Of Biliteracy

What is this Seal? It is a seal that can be attached to diplomas, transcripts, certificates, and comes with certificates which certify that your student has a functional ability in a language other than English.

Why is this important/ helpful to my student?

  1. Less than 20% of schools in CT offer this across the board, to all students, which would make your student competitive in scholarships, university and job applications.
  2. In an increasingly competitive job market and globalized world, this attests to your student’s perseverance, dedication, and general achievement in a language.
  3. This opens up diverse study abroad, work abroad, and Embassy/ State Department programming.
  4. This lets your student see how they fall on the National World Language standards as set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
  5. Our students typically score above average on these tests, May 2024 Press Release.

How do I/ does my student participate in this?

  • Students MUST be in 11th or 12th grade.
  • Your student needs to show proficiency that is typically reached near the end of a level 4 (typically junior-senior level) in any of the languages offered at EHS and/or a heritage language.
  • This means any of the languages offered at EHS and beyond. We have had students succeed in: Arabic, Bengali, French, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tamil.
  • Your student does not need to take a language currently to participate.
  • Your student must be passing English in order to be certified with the Seal (as it’s for Biliteracy, including English and another language).
If you would like more information, here is the LINK to the testing website for most languages, and the LINK to a more indepth letter from the World Language Department.

Finally, what is needed at this time?

All interested students and guardians of those students will need to FILL OUT THIS ATTACHED FORM so that we may generate the email lists, etc. needed to organize this. Please do this by no later than March 13th.

There will be a mandatory informational meeting for students at 2:20pm in the EHS Library on March 19th.
